Spring Cleaning Your Finances

Spring is a natural time to clear out the clutter in your home- and it’s a great time to do the same with your money. A simple weekend is enough to make your finances more organized, secure, and easier to manage.

1. Close old, unused accounts

Start by listing all your bank, credit card, and investment accounts. Ask yourself: Do I still use this? Do I need it? Old checking accounts, store credit cards, or rarely used savings accounts add confusion and increase the chance that you will miss a statement or notice. If an account no longer serves a real purpose, consider closing it. Before you do, move any remaining balance, stop automatic payments, and download statements you might need for your records.

2. Consolidate old 401(k)s

If you have changed jobs a few times, you may have retirement money scattered in several old 401(k) plans. That makes it harder to track your investments and your progress toward retirement. Check where each old account is held, then decide whether you want to roll then into your current employer’s plan (if it’s solid and low-cost) or into an IRA that you control. Fewer accounts usually mean less paperwork, fewer logins, and a clearer picture of your nest egg.

3. Update Beneficiaries

Next, review the beneficiaries on your retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and any transfer-on-death designations. Major life events like marriage, divorce, births, or deaths might mean your previous instructions no longer match your wishes. Updating beneficiaries is often as simple as logging into your account or filling out a short form. This step helps ensure money goes where you intend it, without delays or confusion for your family.

4. Tidy up passwords and statements

Finally, give your financial security a quick tune-up. Create a safe system for storing passwords, such as a reputable password manager or clearly organized, secure physical list. Turn on two-factor authentication where possible. Then, go paperless on accounts you actively use, and unsubscribe from statements or alerts you do not need. With fewer emails and incoming mail, it becomes much easier to spot what you need.
By the end of the weekend, you will not just have clearer finances-you will have less stress and more confidence about where everything stands. If you have any questions reach out to me at Meikle Financial Group and I will be glad to help.
